BRAC, starting out as a limited relief operation in 1972 in a remote village of Bangladesh has turned into the largest development organization in the world. Organizing the poor using communities’ own human and material resources, BRAC (formerly Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) catalyses lasting change, creating an ecosystem in which the poor have the chance to seize control of their own lives. BRAC does this with a holistic development approach geared toward inclusion, using tools like microfinance, education, healthcare, legal services, community empowerment and more. Our work now touches the lives of an estimated 135 million people, with staff and BRAC-trained entrepreneurs numbering in the hundreds of thousands, a global movement bringing change to 12 countries in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.ement bringing change to 12 countries in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
People living in inaccessible pockets are facing numerous problems and they are becoming increasingly marginalized and isolated. People living in chars, especially women, are largely unaware of their rights and entitlements, which limits their agency and does not allow them to raise their voices. BRAC’s strategy for 2011 to 2015 sets the organization’s programmatic goal around achievement of MDGs with focus on reaching the most marginalized, neglected communities and areas of extreme deprivation. BRAC assists with providing essential services to support poverty reduction that cannot be supported by government agencies at this early stage of development in CDSP areas; providesmicrofinance services to enable the poor to take advantage of an improved environment and infrastructure, and support government agencies to implement CDSP IV, including clean water and sanitation, and promoting human rights and legal awareness, especially for women.

Society for Development Initiatives (SDI) was established in 1993 by a group of likeminded development workers who were driven to address the social maladies with a vision of realizing the human potential of the disadvantaged and powerless, alienated from the economic and institutional resources. SDI is a platform that has drawn NGO professionals to it who have adopted social development as their life goals. SDI is a midlevel national NGO involved in the poverty alleviation of the people of Bangladesh with its limited capacity. SDI’s mission is sustainable development, a society where all people will have equal opportunities and access to resource to realize their human potentials and quality of life aspirations. SDI’s mission is to trigger a self-empowerment process whereby the poor and powerless can take charge of their ownself-actualization agenda and participation in the decision making process affecting their lives.
The SDI CDSP IV project is implemented in 20 villages, 5 unions in 3 Upazilas with 4158 households. The landless, distressed poor people settled in the Nangulia Char and Urir Char are the participants of the project. Most of the inhabitants in chars are migrants, originating from different coastal areas that were eroded, and thus their food and livelihood security is vulnerable. SDI is active in a wide range of activities. Base-line surveys are conducted, support of microfinance group formation and capacity building, health and family planning, water and sanitation program, homestead agriculture and value chain development, legal and human rights program, and awareness raising on disaster management and climate change.
